twice is a south korean girl group formed by jyp entertainment. they were formed by the survival show called 'sixteen.'
the group consists of 9 members; nayeon, jeongyeon, momo, sana, jihyo, mina, dahyun, chaeyoung, and tzuyu.
they debuted on october 20, 2015 with the ep 'the story begins' and the title track 'ooh-ahh하게."
they rose to fame in april 2016 with their song 'cheer up.' the song charted at number 1 on the gaon digital chart and became the best-performing single of the year. it was also song of the year at many award shows.
they officially debuted in japan in june 2017 with the release of #twice, a compilation album of the japanese versions of their korean title tracks. #twice debuted at number 2 on the oricon albums chart and it sold 136,157 copies within seven days,

jyp announced the debut of a new girl group in early 2014. the twice members included in the original group, 6mix, were nayeon, jeongyeon, jihyo, and sana. however, due to 2 members leaving the company before the debut, 6mix's debut was cancelled, and sixteen was announced.
originally, twice was supposed to be a 7 member group (nayeon, jeongyeon, sana, jihyo, mina, dahyun, and chaeyoung.) however, on the final episode of sixteen, jyp made some additions to the group. he added tzuyu, who was the 'audience's pick' and the most popular trainee by the end of the show. he also added momo, who was eliminated earlier, because he felt like there needed to be a member in the group that had performance abilities like her.
on october 7th, 2015, jyp announced twice would be debuting with the ep 'the story begins' and title track 'like ooh ahh." the album and song were released on october 20th, 2015. the music video hit 50 million views on youtube within five months of their debut and became one of the most-viewed debut music videos for any kpop group.
twice had their first comeback on april 24, 2016, with the ep 'page two' and the title track 'cheer up.' this comeback was extremely successful, giving twice their first win on may 5, exactly one year after the initial airing of sixteen. it also won song of the year at two award shows.
in celebration of their one year anniversary, twice unveiled the song 'one in a million' that would be on their third mini album, twicecoaster lane 1. the album along with it's title track, 'tt' was released on october 24, 2016. tt became the first music video to pass 200 million views by any female kpop group.
their first tour, twiceland - the opening, was announced on january 10th, 2017. the tour took place in korea, thailand, and singapore. after the korean leg of the tour, twice released a repackage of twicecoaster lane 1. the album, twicecoaster lane 2, was released on february 20, 2017, along with the music video for knock knock. the album also includes a special song called ice cream.
on february 24, 2017, twice opened social media pages for their japanese debut. it was announced that they would officially be debuting in japan on june 28.
on may 15, 2017, twice released their 4th mini album, 'signal' along with the music video for their title track with the same name. 'signal' includes collaborations with JYP, who produced the title track, and former member of wonder girls, ha:tfelt, who wrote the final track on the mini album, 'only you.'
on june 14, 2017, twice released the japanese verson of signal as a countdown to their japanese debut. a week later, they released the music video for the japanese version of tt. then, on june 28, they released their first japanese album, '#twice." the album included 10 songs, their 5 korean title tracks and the japanese versions of their songs. #twice debuted at number 2 on oricon albums charts with 136,157 copies sold within seven days of its release.
on october 18, 2017, they released their first japanese single, 'one more time.' this single was the fastest selling and biggest first day sales single by any kpop girl group.
twice released their first full album 'twicetagram' on october 30, 2017 along with the title track 'likey.' the album debuted at number 10, charting higher than their last mini album 'signal', which debuted at number 11.
on november 16, it was announced that twice would perform at a year end event in japan called Kōhaku Uta Gassen. they were the first kpop act to attend the event in 6 years.
on december 11, a christmas reissue of the album was released with 2 new songs, 'heartshaker' and 'merry and happy', with heartshaker being the title track.
on february 7, 2018, twice released their second japanese single 'candy pop.' the group also went on their first japanese tour starting on january 19.
on april 9, twice released 'what is love?' and their 5th mini album with the same name.
shortly after, on may 16, they released their third japanese single 'wake me up.' it became a certified double platinum single.
on may 18 and going until may 20th, they embarked on their second tour - twiceland zone 2 - in seoul.
on july 9th, they released a repackage of the mini album 'what is love?' called 'summer nights' with three new songs, 'shot thru the heart', 'chillax', and the title track 'dance the night away'.
on september 12, twice released their first japanese studio album called 'BDZ'. the title track with the same name was pre-released on august 17 as a digital single.
on november 5, they released 'yes or yes', their 6th mini album with the title track of the same name.
on march 6, 2019, they released #twice2, which was their second compilation album. it became a platinum certified album.
on april 22, 2019, they released their seventh mini album 'fancy you' and the title track 'fancy'. this mini album made twice the best-selling kpop girlgroup of all time with a total of 3.7 million copies sold from their 12 korean releases. they surpassed the 20 year old record of girl group S.E.S.
on june 11, they released two japanese singles called 'breakthrough' and 'happy happy'.

twice has national and world wide recognition along with consecutive hit songs. many people dub them as the, or the next, nation's girl group. they are also praised for the member's individuality and teamwork. their songs also have addictive 'killing parts', such as the tt pose is tt, 'jjirit jjirit' in signal, and the iconic 'shy shy shy' in cheer up. twice has been able to surpass gender boundaries. korean and western outlets have made note of their impact and popularity. during the 2017 south korean presidential election, candidate and now elected president moon jaein used 'cheer up' with modified lyrics as their campaign jingles.
twice's popularity in japan is quite honestly insane. even before they officially debuted, their popularity was large. young females in japan love twice because of the presence of the japanese members, stating that fans can relate and feel closer to them. many people say twice is to thank for 'reigniting the love for kpop' in japan.
it was also reported that twice is the biggest contributor of the rise of jype's stock, which increased in value by a factor of seven in less than three years. since the group's debut in 2015, it rose from ₩4,500 to ₩31,400 in 2018.
